This design allowed the builders to make the best use of the limited space available while striving to create a theatre focused on audience comfort and outstanding sightlines and acoustics. But while the team chose an elegant and classic style, the hall also features many distinctive innovations. Mr. Smith has been working professionally for the past forty years, both as a designer for the stage and as a consultant for numerous theatre projects.

Working closely with Denver’s Division of Theatres and Arenas, Semple Brown Design considered many options before launching the final concept for the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The firm had been in discussions with the City as early as 1993, trying to solve this unique puzzle. To begin the design process, members of the firm first considered the state of the old Auditorium Theatre and the needs of the people and organizations that would eventually use the new theatre.

The Ellie Caulkins Opera House Box Office is open two hours prior to each performance. Our four resident companies manage their individual ticket sales and are the only authorized ticket providers for their events. There are no gift cards available for the entire Arts Complex, however, each resident company has a gift card option. In the 1980s other theaters were constructed next to the Auditorium, including Boettcher Concert Hall, Bonfils Theatre Complex and the Denver Center Theatre, to which the Seawell Ballroom was added in the 1990s (these now make up the Denver Performing Arts Complex). The Auditorium arena received another makeover in the early 1990s when the Temple Hoyne Buell Theater was built into it. This theater was a reincarnation of the Municipal Auditorium's old theater and basketball and wrestling arena.

Late-comers will be seated at the earliest possible break in the performance; for some performances, this may not be until the first intermission. Opera Colorado does not offer refunds in the event of late arrival or missed performance. Meet this season’s group of talented opera performers, joining Opera Colorado for an eight-month residency. There are many ways to support the artists and staff of Opera Colorado. Download the AXS app for iOS or Android to review your tickets prior to arriving at the venue, and have your AXS Mobile ID displayed for validation and scanning at the entry doors.

The curves of the space also create a sense of drama in the lobby. The architecture is designed to be timeless – there are no trendy colors. The design team intended for the patron to be the person on show in the lobby. Currently, tickets to Colorado Symphony events are only available online or by phone. The Colorado Symphony Box Office is located at the Arts Complex in Boettcher Concert Hall. While the box office is temporarily closed due to COVID-19, phone lines are open Monday - Friday from 10am to 6pm.

Patrons should take the Z elevators on the Champa Street side to “Street Level.” Then cross Champa at the signal and follow the 13th Street sidewalk to the DPAC. (The path is accessible and well-lit.) From there, take the DPAC Garage elevators to Level 3 to reach the Ellie Caulkins Opera House entrance. Garage parking is available in the Denver Performing Arts Complex and Colorado Convention Center garages. However, please note that both the DPAC and Convention Center frequently hosts several events a day, and the garages can fill up quickly—especially on weekends. Or, consider alternate forms of transportation, including RTD Light Rail, Uber, or Lyft.
